soapstone

Most of our smaller products are made from soapstone, which is mined and carved in western Kenya. This includes candle holders, boxes, bowls, plates. Soapstone feels like marble, is weighty and perpetually cold to touch, although is not as strong.

The white soapstone is the harder form of this stone - and thus better quality - because it is extracted from deeper within the rock. It is highly polished to finish, and is smooth to touch. It is also harder to come by - we found only one supplier in Nairobi. Some pieces have slight discolourations, which occur naturally in the rock.

The softer soapstone is much more common and a softer form of the stone. Each item is hand painted, and the colours will fade over time, especially in direct sunlight.

Care

The white hard soapstone can be washed in soapy water, but should not be submerged for long periods, and is not dishwasher safe. Plates can be used for dining, but knives will scratch the surface, so wear and tear will be visible.

Coloured soft soapstone should not be submerged in water, but can wiped clean with a lightly moistened cloth. The paint will fade over time, especially in direct sunlight.

wood

Bed-2-End-view-with-bedding

All our driftwood-style furniture and wooden frames are hand made in Kenya from jacaranda or cypress wood. We buy the furniture directly from craftsmen, who incorporate the natural characteristics and grooves of the wood, making each piece unique. Our furniture is simple, elegant, tactile and seriously rustic.

We are a small business and do not have a showroom, but we hope that you will get a good feel for our products from the pictures. We can also email higher resolution images upon request. Not all our range is pictured, and pieces will be added gradually, so join our mailing list to keep up to date.

The animal stools are individually hand painted in Kenya and there is some variation in paintwork. They are attractive to children but we cannot certify that they are strong enough to be sat on, although they are sturdy. We do not accept liability for any breakage or injury caused through such use.

The coloured frames are hand painted and some fading may occur over time.

Care

The wood is finished with varnish, so it can be wiped clean with a damp cloth, while occasional polishing will help maintain it's luster. Coasters should be used on dining tables, shelf tops, stools etc to prevent marking.
